“Just like our typical traffic stops, we'll be asking for the insurance credential. So just like you give your driver’s license to us now, we'll also be asking too in addition the insurance card as well,” he says.

According to the state patrol, the fines would start at $200.50 for not having insurance. If you don't have proof of it, you'd be fined $10. If you show fraudulent proof, fines start at $767.50.

Lorenz says unlike some other states, you most likely will be able to drive away after the stop.

“We don't see in regards to carrying the certificate requiring any towing but it’ll be on a case by case basis,” he says. “It will be relatively rare where a vehicle will be towed for that violation.”

Lorenz says the biggest challenge will be getting people to keep their cards in their cars. That way, if a friend or family member borrows your car, they will be covered.

Lorenz says if you're pulled over and don't have your proof of insurance on you at the time, but can prove it later, the fines will be waived.

Wisconsin is the 49th state to require vehicle insurance.
